February 11, 2009 — According to a white paper from the ARC Advisory Group, Mitsubishi Electric’s integration of Cognex In-Sight machine vision into the Mitsubishi iQ platform significantly shortens the time and lowers the cost of applying vision systems, making these systems more practical to apply in a host of industries. Mitsubishi Electric Automation commissioned the white paper.

The ARC white paper authors state, “In today’s highly competitive manufacturing environments, the Mitsubishi Electric and Cognex partnership provides a comprehensive solution that not only reduces downtime and maximizes productivity, but also ensures that procedures are in place for regulatory compliance.” The authors go on to say, “Mitsubishi Electric is well ahead of the curve compared to most major global automation suppliers in anticipating the increasing need for vision capabilities in an automation platform.”

Mitsubishi Electric integrates Cognex machine vision

The Mitsubishi Electric-Cognex solution offers manufacturers a standard set of integratable products, rather than an untested set of components patched together to perform a specific function. These solutions offer easy accessibility to all useful features and functions of logic, motion, HMI, vision, and robotic domains in a manner such that each task is a part of a single system.

Early sections of the white paper describe machine vision’s overall advantages and the expanding role of machine vision. Later sections talk about the importance of integrating vision with robotics. The extensively researched and detailed white paper explores the time, cost, and engineering barriers typically associated with integrating machine vision into a control architecture.

“This new white paper details what is being done at the leading edge of automation technology to eliminate issues and barriers to the application of machine vision,” said Sloan Zupan, Mitsubishi Electric marketing manager. “We believe this white paper is a must read for everyone looking to understand the advantages of a vision system which is pre-integrated into a platform that includes one or more of the following — logic, motion, robotics, HMI, and CNC.”
